Doing Business Taiwan Style:
International Legal Network Globalaw Delivers Deals in Taipei
Globalaw Secures Deals Worth US $500,000 Following Face-To-Face Meeting in Taipei
22 April, 2014 – Globalaw, a global network of 113 independent law firms operating in 89 countries worldwide, today announces that at its most recent annual Asia-Pacific regional meeting, held 10th – 12th April in Taipei, Taiwan, a number of contracts and deals were discussed, with an estimate total value of at least US $500,000 in legal fees.
The largest of these is with a large financial conglomerate in Taiwan, who is planning to work with at least nine (in Hong Kong, Cayman Islands, British Virgin Islands, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Mauritius, Germany, Cyprus, and the Netherlands) of the Globalaw network member law firms for company formation services, as it seeks to upgrade part of its wealth management service by offering to its High Net Worth customers reliable legal resources around the globe.
The deal came about as a result of an unusual collaboration arranged by the conference’s host law firm – Shay & Partners – which included a series of roundtable conversations between the foreign Globalaw lawyers, and local representatives of various Taiwanese businesses. Of the 39 individuals from 27 corporations who attended, 14 are listed companies in Taiwan and Nasdaq, and many are now in follow-up conversations about the potential to work with the Globalaw delegates who attended, about their potential advice.
In addition to the local business roundtable sessions, delegates at the meeting were welcomed to Taipei by speeches from Hsiu-Chu Hung, the Deputy Speaker of Taiwan’s Legislative Yuan (Congress), and Dr. Chi-Kuo Mao, the Vice Premier of the Executive Yuan, who talked about the importance of the principle of free trade in enabling networking and fruitful contacts between countries. The 62 attending lawyers – most of whom were first time visitors to Taiwan – enjoyed the hospitality of Steven Pan, Chairman of the The Regent Hotel Group, and also heard views and predictions about the future of the Asian economy over the next ten years.
Arthur Shay, Partner at host firm Shay & Partners and a previous President of Globalaw, commented: “I am delighted to report that we have had a very successful Globalaw regional meeting in Taipei. Our friends in Globalaw are happy to have visited this great city, and to have created new business opportunities from a range of Taiwanese clients. Over the next few weeks and months we are convinced that some of these local businesses will take global legal assistance from the member firms – who are always easily accessible and available to help on a wide range of legal services.”
"One hundred emails cannot replace one face to face meeting", added Prof. Dr. Ulrich von Jeinsen, senior partner of the German Globalaw member Göhmann, "After a two hours meeting with a Taiwanese high tech developer and producer I have been able to channel on behalf of my German client a promising cooperation agreement. On this, the parties worked for months before but just per mails."
William Taylor, President of Globalaw added: "Words can not adequately express the excellence of our time in Taipei in which Arthur Shay and his distinguished guests and colleagues introduced us to this beautiful city, its marvelous and welcoming people, wonderful cuisine, exquisite culture and distinguished guests. This was truly a lifetime experience that will live in the annals of Globalaw history as a milestone of what the network seeks to achieve through the interchange of its members who for but just a few days became honored citizens of this remarkable country."
The regional meeting was the second to be held in Taipei (after the first in 2002), and Globalaw’s thirteenth in the Asia-Pacific region. The meeting was sponsored by NEC, Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan Mobile, FarEasTone, Vibo, Asia Pacific Telecom and TTIDA.
